Went back to a paper index for my collections after 5 months with an app tracker, and the pen won
I setup a digital collections tracker back in March because typing felt faster, and I stuck with it til about 3 weeks ago. The problem was I never scrolled back to check what was in each collection, so I kept re-making lists I already had on page 40 something. Swapped to one paper index page at the front of my journal with a page number next to each collection name, and now I flip to it every single morning without thinking. It takes me maybe 10 seconds to add a new one and I can see everything at once instead of tapping through menus. Anyone else ditch a tracker and go back to a plain index, or did the app thing stick for you?
Been there. I ran a spreadsheet for almost a year and it got to the point where I had 60 something rows and could not tell you what half of them were without clicking into each one. What finally fixed it for me was keeping the paper index but adding one small thing: I write the date next to each entry, so when I look at the page I can see what I have not touched in a while. That alone stopped me from duplicating stuff I had already logged months back. The other trick is to leave a few blank lines between sections so you can squeeze in new names without rewriting the whole page. Ten seconds to add something is about right, and honestly the flipping is the whole point. You see everything at once, which no menu screen ever really gives you.
