Warning: My client windfall has me stuck between save now or spend later

Got a big check from a finish-up job. Cash is sitting in my account. Some folks say stash it for a rainy day. Others say buy new test gear to speed up work. Rainy day fund means security. New gear means faster jobs and more cash later. Which choice actually counts as a budgeting win? Tell me your take.

Oh man, my take is terrible because I always talk myself into the gear. I bought a fancy signal analyzer calling it an investment, and it mostly just looks cool on my bench. My rainy day fund is a sad little envelope.

Ugh, I know exactly what you mean. We all do that thing where we call pricey gear an investment to feel better about buying it. I watch people get the latest tech or tools, saying it will change their life, but it just sits there. Meanwhile, the important stuff like saving money gets pushed aside. It's like we're wired to want the shiny new thing right now. That makes it so hard to build up any real savings for later.
