Hostel in Lisbon lost my booking, so I ended up saving $60 by sleeping on a stranger's couch
I showed up at my hostel in Lisbon at 11pm after a 14 hour bus ride from Seville and the guy at the desk said they had no record of my reservation. I had paid $45 upfront through a site that turned out to be a sketchy third party, and they would not refund me or give me a bed. A girl in the lobby overheard and offered me her couch for two nights since her roommate was away, and I paid her $20 total plus bought her dinner. That whole mess taught me to always book direct with the hostel and get a confirmation email I can pull up offline. Anyone else get burned by those cheap booking sites, and do you have a go to way to check a place is real before you pay?
