Found a $25/night gem in Porto by asking the bakery lady

Last month I stayed in Porto for 5 nights and could not find anything under $60 online. I bought a pastel de nata every morning at the same shop, and on day 3 the woman behind the counter told me her cousin rents a spare room for 25 euros a night. Has anyone else gotten better deals by asking locals instead of using apps?

...and here I am thinking I was clever for haggling with a guy selling roasted chestnuts, ended up paying extra because he felt bad for me. That's awesome you found that spot though, my luck with locals usually involves me mispronouncing something and them just nodding to get me to stop talking. I swear the universe gives good deals to people who are naturally charming, and I got the leftover charm that comes with severe social awkwardness. Maybe I should start buying pastries everywhere I travel and just hope someone's cousin has a spare room and a lot of patience.
