My aunt's $1.50 lentil trick beat my $12 pasta sauce
Last Tuesday my aunt watched me dump a jar of marinara over noodles and she just shook her head. She pulled out a bag of dried lentils, some onion, and a can of crushed tomatoes from her pantry. Said she feeds her family of five for under $10 a week using that combo and a handful of spices. I tried her version that night, simmering the lentils into the sauce for about 30 minutes. It stretched way further, tasted heartier, and my kid actually asked for seconds. I still like pasta sauce, but now I see it as a base, not the whole meal. Anyone else have a relative who cooks cheaper and better than you without even trying?
