I compared making my own taco seasoning to buying the packets, saved like $2 a month

Honestly the real win is just knowing what's in it. Those packets have so much salt and weird anti-caking stuff, it's crazy. Once you mix up your own chili powder and cumin blend you can actually taste the spices. My food went from tasting like generic taco to something way better, like the difference between ketchup and real tomatoes. The couple bucks is nice but that control over flavor is what keeps me doing it.

Try toasting whole cumin seeds in a dry pan until they smell nutty, then grind them fresh. It makes a huge difference compared to pre-ground stuff that's been sitting on a shelf. I keep a cheap coffee grinder just for spices.

Yeah, "control over flavor" is the key. You can tweak it for different dishes too, like adding a little cocoa powder for mole style or smoked paprika for a deeper taste. That flexibility beats any packet.
