Level vs line, which do you trust for a long run?

I did a 40 foot garden wall in Portland last month and split the job between level and string line. The level had me chasing tiny bubbles all day, but the string line kept everything dead straight with way less fuss. My partner swore by the level for plumb checks, yet for the horizontal runs the string won every time. Anyone else find that a stretched line beats a level on long stretches, or am I just bad at reading the bubble?
