Hot take: the 3 hour bonsai wiring class at the Sacramento show ruined every houseplant I own
Went to the Capitol City bonsai show two weekends ago mostly to kill a Saturday. Signed up for the beginner wiring workshop for $35 because my ficus has been looking sad for a year. The instructor, some guy named Herb who has been doing this for 40 years, spent the first hour just making us look at our trees. No touching. Just stare and figure out which branch is the front.
I thought that was a waste of time. It was not a waste of time. I got home and looked at my pothos and my rubber plant and my sad ficus and all I could see were the flaws. Branch crossing here. Weird gap there. One side heavier than the other.
Now I have 6 feet of copper wire and a pair of jin pliers on my coffee table and my girlfriend thinks I lost my mind. Which I probably did. But the ficus is going to look amazing in 3 years, I swear.
Anyone else get dragged into a niche thing by a cheap workshop and now you can't stop? What was yours?
