Neighbor's raised bed made me rethink my whole yard

Talked to the guy two doors down while he was pulling carrots in October. He said he just plants what grows well together and stops fighting the soil. Now I'm looking at my bare strip of dirt different, anyone else get humbled by a simple setup like that?

Did you check what your soil actually wants before planting? That bare strip might just need some compost and the right neighbors, not a full overhaul. I stopped fighting my clay by adding raised rows and picking stuff like tomatoes with basil and marigolds, it made a huge difference without much work. Once you match the plants to the spot instead of the other way around, the upkeep drops way down.
