A guy at the Fort Worth botanical garden told me my fern was thirsty and he was right
He pointed at the crispy brown edges on my Boston fern and said the tap water was the problem, not the light. Switched to rain water I collect in a bucket on my porch and it pushed out 6 new fronds in 3 weeks, so now I want to know what else I've been blaming on the wrong thing.
I killed three "low light" pothos on a north facing windowsill before figuring out the window had a film on it from years of cooking grease, so they were basically sitting in the dark. Honestly my track record with plants is just me blaming everything except the thing I refuse to check. The tap water thing got me too, my peace lily stopped getting brown tips the week I started leaving a jug out overnight. Now I walk around my yard poking at plants like some kind of detective, soil meter in one hand, coffee in the other. The fern wasn't thirsty, my faucet was just rude.
