Our book club keeps skipping the author's notes and it hurts the debate

Last Thursday in Columbus, three people argued about a character's motive that the author literally explained in the afterword, and nobody had read it. This is the third meeting where half the group treats the epilogue and footnotes like optional extras instead of part of the book. Should we make reading every section a rule, or am I being too strict about something that's 'just for fun'?
