My book club voted out the narrator and it changed everything

Last month in our Portland group of 12 we tried a debate where we each argued against the narrator of 'Gone Girl' being reliable from page one, not just after the twist. I thought it was a dumb gimmick, but three people found details I'd missed over two reads and the whole conversation shifted from plot to character intent. Has anyone else tried attacking a narrator's credibility before the big reveal, and did it ruin or rescue the discussion for you?
