But what if those rules just make everything boring and fake? Setting a bunch of boundaries before you even start talking sounds like you're planning for a fight, not a discussion. It might stop people from getting mad, but it also stops anyone from saying anything real. Sometimes you have to risk a little heat to get to a good point.

Yeah, I totally get that. I used to think rules just choked the life out of a talk. But I was in this group chat that blew up over politics because someone took a comment about taxes as a dig at their family. A simple 'no personal attacks' rule from the start would have kept it about the idea, not the people. It’s not about planning for a fight, it’s about making sure the fight stays fair so the real point doesn’t get lost.
