A book club member said my picks were too safe, so I tried one wild card
At our March meeting in Portland, one of the quieter guys finally spoke up and told me all my choices were 'comfortable reads.' At first I got defensive, but then I realized he had a point. Every book I suggested was either a bestseller or something I already knew would spark easy discussion. So for April I threw in a weird translated novella about a guy who builds a boat in his apartment. Half the group hated it, but the other half argued about it for a full hour after we were supposed to leave. That one book gave us more debate material than the last six picks combined. Has anyone else gotten called out like that and ended up glad they listened? What's the riskiest pick that actually paid off for your club?
