Made a rookie mistake on a 3-inch pipe weld Tuesday that cost me 4 hours of rework

My buddy Tom put a root pass in that looked perfect but he forgot to purge the backside on a stainless job. Came back the next morning to a line of rust scale running through the whole thing. Foreman made him cut it out with a grinder and start over, took him almost 5 hours total. He still brings it up whenever someone talks about pipe welds going bad. You ever have a weld that looked good but failed the test?
