Appreciation post: the $12 marker hack that saved my layout work

Got tired of my soapstone snapping in the cold last month on a job in Gary. Picked up a pack of those paint pens with the chisel tip at the hardware store on a whim. Turns out they mark way clearer on rusty plate and they don't crumble when you're leaning over a beam. Only downside is they dry out fast if you leave the cap off, so I keep one in my shirt pocket and re-cap it every time. Anyone else switch from soapstone and deal with the drying thing?

...and here I am still finding soapstone crumbs in my jacket from last winter like some kind of chalky confetti situation. Tbh the paint pens are a game changer but I've learned to treat the cap like it's got a bomb in it, click it shut the second I'm done or you're buying a new one by lunch.
