Showerthought: I always brushed off quenching in warm water until my 5160 blade came out of the oil at 52 HRC
I had a batch of 5160 hunter blades that kept coming out too soft after tempering, and I blamed my thermometer for weeks. An old smith down in Tulsa had me try warming my quench oil to about 130F instead of room temp, and the same steel jumped 6 points on the hardness tester. Anyone else run warm oil on 5160 or is that just asking for a warp on thinner stock?
