An old timer at the Eastside hammer-in told me I was quenching too late and it changed how I treat every blade now
He said wait till the color hits a dull cherry red instead of bright orange and since I tried that last fall my edge retention has been way more consistent, anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit like that?

Is it weird that I used to think going hotter was better? I was totally convinced bright orange meant you were getting the steel hot enough for a proper quench. But then a buddy let me try a blade he treated at that dull cherry red and the difference was night and day. My edges used to chip or roll randomly, now they're boringly consistent which is exactly what I want. It took me like two years to finally trust that cooler is actually better for some steels.
