Why I stopped doubting plastic tire levers after a guy in Tucson proved me wrong
I always figured plastic levers were junk and only kept metal ones in my box for 12 years. Last month this older guy rolled his bike into the co-op in Tucson with a flat and asked for my metal lever. He handed it back and pulled out a yellow plastic one, then popped the tire off in about 4 seconds while I watched. He said metal levers pinch tubes and scratch rims way more than people admit, and he has been using the same plastic set since 2009. I tried it on the next 6 wheels that came through and only messed up one tube, which was my fault for rushing. Now I want to know what else I wrote off too fast. Any of you still running metal levers or have you switched?
The "metal levers pinch tubes" thing gets passed around a lot but it's not really the material, it's rounded edges. A smooth metal lever treats your tube the same as plastic, the sharp ones are what cause trouble.
