Rant: I trusted one click of a torque wrench on a customer's carbon bars and it cost me $180
Last Tuesday a guy rolled into my shop in Tucson with a creaky stem on his carbon road bike, and instead of pulling out my beam-style wrench I grabbed the cheap clicker I keep in the drawer. I figured the click was close enough to 5 Nm and sent him out the door. Two days later he came back with a crushed steerer tube and a hairline crack in the bar, and I had to eat $180 in parts plus labor to make it right. Since then I set every stem bolt by feel first with a 4mm hex, then confirm with the beam wrench while watching the needle creep up slow. Does anyone here still trust clickers on carbon, or am I the last guy who learned this the hard way?
