My movie night pick turned into a 20 minute screaming match with my soundbar

Hosted a bad movie night last Friday in Austin, threw on The Room. Everything was going fine until the scene where Johnny throws the phone, and my soundbar just started buzzing like a dying fly. Couldn't hear a line of dialogue for 10 straight minutes. I unplugged it twice, checked the Bluetooth on my phone, even rebooted the TV. Finally gave up and just turned on the subtitles and put the soundbar in the closet. Everyone was laughing more at my panic than the movie. Has anyone else had their gear ruin the timing of a so-bad-it's-good screening? What do you do when the tech fails mid-cringe?
