Showerthought: I mowed my lawn at 2 inches for 3 summers, then my neighbor asked why my grass looked fried
I always figured shorter grass meant less mowing, so I kept the deck on the lowest notch for 3 summers straight. My neighbor Dale walked over in July and asked why half my front yard looked like straw while his stayed green. He told me cutting cool season grass below 3 inches fries the roots and lets weeds take over. I raised the deck to 3.5 inches and watered deep once a week instead of a light sprinkle every night. Two months later the brown patches filled back in and I pulled maybe a third of the weeds I used to. Now I want to know, does anyone scalp their lawn on purpose in fall, and does it actually help or did I just get lucky?
