I finally put a $60 motion light over my back gate and now my dog actually comes in at night
For two years I was standing on the porch at 10pm yelling for my dog to come inside. She would just stand at the back fence staring at nothing. I put a $60 solar motion light on the gate post last month and now she walks right up when it clicks on. Turns out she could not see the steps by the gate and did not want to trip. I never thought about it from her side. My neighbor saw me messing with it and said his old beagle had the same problem until he added a $15 path light. Does anyone else have a dog that just freezes in the yard when it gets dark?
I have to disagree with the whole idea here. Dogs see way better in the dark than we do, so I doubt she was standing there because she couldn't see the steps. More likely the light itself is what changed things, it became a cue that you were out there and it was time to come in. My old lab did the exact same freeze at the fence and a light never helped him one bit, he still needed me to walk out and get him. What actually fixed it for us was teaching him a solid come command with treats, no hardware needed. The light might be working but probably not for the reason you think.
