Tbh I think most people pack way too many miles into day one on the Timberline Trail
Did the Timberline Trail around Mt Hood two weeks ago and blew past the usual first camp at Ramona Falls because I felt good, then hit a wall hard at mile 14 with 3,000 feet still to climb. Turns out a ranger at the Zigzag station told me most folks who bail early do the exact same thing, they front-load day one and their legs are toast by lunch on day two. I finished in 4 days but day two was miserable and slow because of that one choice. Has anyone else found a first-day mileage cap that actually works for them on big loops like this?
