My water bill tripled for 4 months before I found the leak
Last October I got a $340 water bill, which is about triple what I normally pay in Decatur. I checked toilets, faucets, even the sprinkler system, everything seemed fine. Then in November it hit $410, and I started thinking I had a billing problem with the county. Last week I finally pulled up the crawl space access panel near the water heater and found a small pipe joint dripping right where the old copper meets the new PEX. It was underground in the slab, so no wet spot ever showed. Plumber quoted $1,800 to repipe that section, but I'm going to fix it myself with a clamp kit and hope it holds. Has anyone else dealt with a slab leak that took forever to locate?

Wait until that clamp fails in six months and you're looking at $5,000 in water damage plus the same pipe to fix again. I'd rather pay the $1,800 once than gamble my whole crawl space on a $20 part from the hardware store.
