Finally got my rain barrel hooked up after 3 tries

I live in Decatur and my backyard turns into a swamp every time it rains hard (which is like every other week in spring). So I got this 50 gallon rain barrel from Home Depot back in February thinking it would be a simple drain fix. First try I put it under a downspout that didn't actually get enough water flow. Second try I forgot to add a screen and ended up with mosquito larvae in there, gross. Third time I watched like 4 YouTube videos and finally got it right with a proper diverter kit. The overflow pipe drains into a little gravel pit I dug last weekend. Now my garden hose actually fills up from the barrel instead of the city line. Has anyone else dealt with trial and error getting these things to work right?

Read somewhere that mosquitoes can breed in a bottle cap of water, so yeah, the screen part is no joke lol. Gravel pit sounds like the move though, I might have to steal that idea.
