Finally got my moss to grow on brick instead of killing it

Been trying for 2 years to get moss to take on my back patio wall near the Beltline. Tried buttermilk mixtures and store spray stuff, nothing worked. Found out my neighbor uses a cheap yogurt blend with local soil water and brushes it on before a rain. It's actually working after doing it 3 times since March. Anyone have luck keeping moss alive through our July heat without it turning brown?

Saw something on a gardening forum where a guy down in Texas swears by mixing in a little bit of unsulphured molasses with his moss slurry to help it hold moisture during heat waves. He said it feeds the soil microbes too. I've been trying it on my shady side of the house where the July sun usually fries everything and the green is hanging on way longer than normal. Might be worth a shot if your yogurt trick starts fading when temps hit 95.

Hold up on the molasses thing for a second. In my experience, the unsulphured part is key because regular molasses can actually burn the moss or attract ants bad. I tried it once on a shady rock wall and got a huge ant problem within two weeks. Your mileage may vary, but I'd test it on a small patch first before going all in. Also make sure you're using a really weak mix, like one teaspoon per gallon of water, or it might get too sugary.
