I finally added up what my "free" credit monitoring trial cost me and it was $238
I signed up for one of those free credit score apps back in January because I wanted to check my score before applying for a car loan. The app said free forever, but after 7 days it auto charged me $19.99 a month and I didn't notice because it came out of a card I barely use. When I finally logged in to check, I saw 12 charges going back almost a year and the score they showed me was 40 points off from what the bank pulled anyway. I called to cancel and the guy on the phone offered me a "special rate" of $9.99 instead of just closing it, which felt like a trap. I ended up disputing it with my bank and got $238 back after 3 weeks of phone calls and one very long hold with a rep named Denise. The fees were buried in a screen I never scrolled to, and the free score was a totally different number than my real FICO. If you're using one of these apps before a big loan, just pull your free reports from annualcreditreport.com instead and skip the monthly fee trap. Has anyone actually found a credit app that doesn't do this, or is the whole thing just a scam with a nice icon?
