Field school trick for reading soil layers that saved my dig
During my first excavation in Arizona, I kept mixing up the strata in the test pit. Everything looked like the same tan dirt to me. My professor told me to wet the profile wall with a spray bottle and look at it from the side in the early morning light. The moisture made the different layers pop, showing the ash line and the old floor surface. After that, I could spot the transition in about 10 seconds flat. Has anyone else used this on a site with dry soil?
