Accidentally erased 2 hours of field notes, salvaged it with my camera roll

I was at a dig site outside Santa Fe last month, labeling pottery shards from a Pueblo III trash midden. My clipboard slid off the tarp into a puddle, and the ink on my waterproof notebook smeared into nothing, just gone in seconds. I panicked for a solid 10 minutes until I remembered I'd taken close-up photos of every shard with my phone for the catalog. Took me another 3 hours to rebuild the context notes by cross-checking the photo timestamps with my GPS track log. It worked out, but my handwriting is still terrible and I'm paranoid about backups now. Has anyone else had to reconstruct data from photos after a field notebook disaster?
