Found a toaster full of dryer lint during a service call in Reno

Went to swap a heating element on a 15 year old dryer and the owner casually mentioned the toaster on the counter acted weird. Opened it up to check, thing was jammed with lint from a vent hose they'd patched with tape. How does that even happen without someone noticing the smell? Anyone else run into DIY fixes that make you question everything?
