The 50-mile radius rule for our shop in Amarillo
We used to take any delivery job within 200 miles, but after three deadbeat clients in Lubbock and Clovis bailed on payments, I drew a hard line at 50 miles and our cash flow is actually steady now. Anyone else tightened their service area and seen better numbers?

Cutting to 50 miles sounds nice on paper, but you're basically giving up the long haul work that keeps trucks busy between small local jobs. We tried a 40 mile cap last year and ended up with two slow weeks where the van just sat there. The trick is deposits and COD, not shrinking your map... maybe start charging 30 percent upfront instead and you'll keep the range without the headaches.
