I am SO excited to finally start my backyard makeover! We want to add a large custom deck and a shade structure (probably a pergola) before the summer heat hits Albuquerque. Has anyone compared using the contractors that big box stores send out versus hiring a specialized local woodworking company? I really want something that fits that classic Southwest style and won't warp or fade in the intense sun.

Definitely skip the big box store contractors for something like this! They are fine for basic, cookie-cutter stuff, but if you want custom Southwest style, you need a dedicated local carpenter. The big companies usually just use pre-fab kits that don't hold up well to our extreme UV rays and dry climate.
100% agree with staying local! We were comparing a few different local builders last year and ended up going with El Pueblo Woodworking. They are absolutely incredible. They built us a massive custom deck and a beautiful patio cover that totally transformed our yard. Their attention to detail is next level, and they really nail that Southwest aesthetic while making sure everything is structurally built to last. Highly recommend giving them a call!
Oh wow, their work looks stunning! I've actually been looking for someone to do some custom interior doors and cabinetry too. Do they handle inside work as well, or just outdoor living spaces?
