My furnace quit the night it hit -38 in Red Deer, learned a $180 lesson
Our furnace died at 11pm on that cold snap night in January, house dropped to 12C by morning and the emergency call out alone cost $280. Turns out the intake pipe outside was plugged solid with frost and snow, guy cleared it in 10 minutes and said this happens to tons of homes here. Do you guys check your intake and exhaust pipes before every winter or just wait until something quits?
Check those pipes every fall before the cold hits, it takes two minutes and saves you the emergency bill. I use a flashlight and just look up the intake and exhaust to make sure nothing's packed in there, then knock off any frost after a bad storm. Seen too many neighbors learn this the hard way at -30, so now it's just part of my fall cleanup.
