I finally tackled the drainage ditch behind my acreage near Red Deer
Rain in May turned my back yard into a pond for two weeks. I kept thinking it would dry up, but the water just sat there. After 5 weekends of digging and hauling gravel, I got a proper swale working. The trick was renting a small excavator for $350, best money I spent all summer. Has anyone else fought with low spots that never drain on their property?

Figured you'd say that, but honestly I think you made it worse. Digging a swale just moves the water somewhere else, usually right onto the neighbor's place. Around here the ground is so heavy clay that nothing soaks in anyway. You might've been better off just planting some willows or letting it be a seasonal pond.
