The old timer at the hangar in Tulsa who taught me to check torque by feel
I was torquing bolts on a Cessna 172 flap track and this old timer named Walt watched me for 10 minutes without saying a word. He finally said 'You're letting the wrench do all the thinking for you' and had me hand him the torque wrench. He showed me how to feel the bolt stretch right before it clicks, said he learned it on B-52s at Tinker in '68. I've been doing it that way for 3 years now and my inspector hasn't found a loose one yet. Anyone else here learn a feel-based trick from a crusty mechanic that actually stuck with you?
