My air fryer basket rusted after 4 months, turns out I was stacking dishes on it while it cooled

I kept my air fryer on the counter next to the stove. After cooking, I'd pull the basket out and set a hot pan or plate on top of it while I plated food. Didn't think twice. Four months in, I noticed brown spots inside the basket coating. Then it started flaking into my food. My wife pointed out I was basically scratching the nonstick layer every time I set something heavy on it. Read the manual online, it says to always use the included trivet and never stack anything on the basket. I now put a folded towel next to the fryer for hot stuff. Anyone else wreck a basket this way or did I just miss the obvious memo?
